Lesson 6: Accurate Dictating Summary
Dictation accuracy comes from several sources, including:
- Consistent placement of the microphone - sometimes, a small movement will adversely affect dictation accuracy. Know how the microphone element is positioned relative to your mouth when dictating. If youve had a good session, feel the microphone - squeeze the foam pad, see how it is positioned so that you may repeat the experience.
Then take off the microphone, fold it up, and then put it on again. Try to put it on the same way. If multiple people are using the same system, it may be useful to have separate microphones so that the adjustment time is reduced.
- Consistent enunciation is more important than your accent, specific pronounciations, or articulation. Keep the cheeks moving when speaking so that enunciation is better. Work at speaking clearly.
- Make corrections, both of words and phrases. When mistakes happen, select the word(s) in error. Correct entire phrases as well as individual words. Dont get carried away doing specific training of words unless they are repeatedly recognized incorrectly. Use the "Correct ..." only when you are certain you spoke correctly and NatSpeak typed the wrong words. If possible, use the "Playback" button to verify. When you find that an error is user induced you can either use the "Scratch That" command or the "Select ..." command to edit.
- Get comfortable with the correction commands - confidence leads to better, more consistent speech.
- Use the Vocabulary Builder to help Dragon know YOUR vocabulary. Repeat the Vocabulary Builder step every few months if you have a substantially larger set of data or if your language changes (as with an author).
- Accept that you'll have some days that are better than others. Don't try to over-analyze why this happens.
