Even before DMPE is available for review, we can make educated guesses about some of its new features. Many of these were introduced into the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 11 and Legal 11 products that became available in September 2010.
This is particularly the case for those moving from Release 9 to DMPE.
Nuance claims an average of 15% fewer errors, that is consistent with what I have observed with my Professional 11 and Legal 11 customers. But this is an average, and a tiny number report more errors while some claim over 50% fewer errors with Release 11. Your mileage will vary! (If moving from Release 9 or earlier, expect significant improvements in accuracy!)
A fancy name for making it run well on a variety of computer systems that realistically vary in performance by a factor of about 20. That is, the faster machines that will be running DMPE are about 20 times faster than the slowest machines, and Nuance has done a credible job in automatically setting up most PC's to get the most out of Dragon given their PC's. The fact remains that Dragon generally runs better and is more accurate on faster PC's. So don't skimp on CPU speed and don't skimp on RAM when you buy your next computer. While it doesn't help Dragon, get screens large enough for your EMR to display as much as it can at once.
Most new PC's have at least 2 processors/CPU's. Now Dragon can use more than one at a time to speed up its algorithms, allowing it to more completely analyze your speech which typically leads to fewer errors.
This has been steadily improving. The recorder manufacturers haven't been sitting back either, recorders such as the Olympus DS-5000 and Philips 9600 are now working well with Dragon, at least when the dictation is done in a fairly quiet environment.
With some EMR's the Sidebar gets in the way, but for short-term use while learning Dragon it can be helpful to have a "cheat sheet" right on the screen.
This means the long-term users have to find things in new places. But it isn't difficult!
It's a change -- the same basic material still exists, but there is some new training/reference material that is of benefit to all users.
Whatever... it is a change and will probably prevent a few errors in setting up profiles
Nice for installations with a lot of users
Nuance had two products, Dragon Medical 10 and Dragon Medical 10 Small Practice Edition, that are now combined into one product. That should help simplify buying decisions. Dragon Medical Practice Edition is announced for practices with 24 or fewer physicians. If your practice has 25+ physicians and is looking to upgrade Dragon Medical and/or Dragon Medical Small Practice licenses, please contact us for guidance.
There are a few custom macros that need to be changed due to some minor changes between Releases 9 and 11. Timing of command execution has changed, so commands that used "Wait" statements are particularly vulnerable.
When adding vocabulary/phrases, you will need to quit using punctuation in the "spoken form." Our advice over the years to use "A." in the spoken forms is now reversed -- do not use periods, if you wish to specify a "spoken form" for an acronym not in the vocabulary then just use the capital letter without a period. Don't worry, Dragon will tell you if you forget to do this!
We recommend new user profiles for users migrating from Release 9. We don't know yet if we will make the same recommendation for those moving from Release 10.
